Culinary arts are a diverse field that can lead to infinite career opportunities. Chefs or Head Cooks manage the overall kitchen and other staff, create dishes, and prepare meals. Short-order Cooks prepare meals and cook for small restaurants and/or institutions. Food Preparation Workers prepare raw ingredients for cooking and do multiple routine tasks.

Educational requirements depend on what type of cooking you will choose to do. You don’t need to usually even need a high school diploma to work as a Short-Order Cook or Food Preparer, but without cooking classes the highest position you could hope to achieve would be a Supervisor.

Various culinary arts classes are offered at vocational schools and community colleges. If you are considering managing or running your own restaurant, it is recommended to also take business classes.

Pursuing a highly profitable, highly rewarding career as a chef or a cook really requires that you attend a culinary school. It will provide the education you need and an advantage in today’s competitive job market. The majority of chefs today are trained in a professional culinary institute, rather than simply gaining skills while on the job.
