If you like instant gratification, feeding people, and working in a kitchen, you might enjoy a career in culinary arts.

Jobs in the culinary arts cover a wide range. Chefs and head cooks manage kitchens and coordinate the work of other staff. They may act as managers, create dishes, or prepare meals. Short-order cooks do the meal preparation and cooking in small restaurants or institutions. Food preparation workers get ingredients ready for cooking and do other routine tasks.

The amount of education you need depends on what type of cooking you want to do. You don’t need a high school diploma to work as a short-order cook or food preparer. You could advance to a supervisor in a fast-food restaurant, but without cooking classes you’re options are limited.

Vocational schools and community colleges offer various culinary arts classes. If you’re thinking about owning or managing a food service business, business classes are a good idea.

Professional culinary institutes offer short programs that award certificates as well as two-year associate’s and four-year bachelor’s degree programs. The American Culinary Federation accredits over 200 culinary arts schools, so be sure to choose an accredited school. You may choose to focus on a specialty such as cake decorating or French cuisine. You’ll get plenty of hands-on kitchen experience in these schools.

The work environment and job responsibilities as well as your work experience and education all affect the salary you will earn. Median annual salaries for chefs and head cooks range between $26,000 and $46,000. Experienced chefs in high-quality restaurants and restaurant owners can earn over six figures. Short-order cooks in fast-food restaurants earn much less, often $8.00 an hour or less.

Culinary arts jobs will be plentiful over the next decade, but most will be in the lower-paying jobs. Vocational or professional training can increase job opportunities.
