If you believe that you have to go to a brick and mortar college or school to complete coursework for your chosen career, you are wrong. These days, there is an abundance of online schools offering courses, programs, certifications and degrees for hundreds (if not thousands) of different careers. Court reporting courses are particularly well suited for the online learning environment. Students enrolling in online court reporting courses are able to complete the requirements of their court reporter programs on their own time and around their busy schedules.

Selecting the right online court reporter program is essential. An accredited school, or one certified by the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA), will often offer the most in-depth and valuable coursework. The requirements of court reporting programs online may vary from school to school. Some schools may require you to spend a certain number of hours in the “classroom” online each day or week while others may offer more flexibility. Be sure you understand the requirements of the school and program you’ve chosen before you enroll.

Court reporting classes will cover many different skills needed for a successful career as a court reporter. You can expect to learn legal theory and terminology, medical terminology, physiology and anatomy, general psychology, English composition, court reporting procedures and court reporting technology. Depending on your area of specialization, you may need to learn to use a stenotype machine, electronic recording devices or voice-writing technology.

Much as on a traditional campus, your court reporting courses will take place in a classroom. However, your classroom will be a virtual one online. You will interact with professors and other students through online classroom software applications. These applications allow professors to post syllabi, course outlines and content, and assignments. The applications may also include chat rooms and discussion boards to facilitate further interaction between professors and students.

Learning materials will vary by school and course but may include textbooks, videos and interactive lessons. You may need to purchase specialized voice-recognition software or even stenotype machines in order to practice what you are learning in your court reporting classes.

You will be required to complete assignments and take tests as part of your online court reporting classes. Assignments may include the writing of papers, participating in discussion forums and completing individual projects. Quizzes and tests are likely to be given periodically to assess your progress. While online court reporting classes generally allow you to choose when and where you study, there are usually deadlines for assignments and exams.

Requirements for practicing court reporters vary by state. Once you’ve completed your court reporting courses online, you’ll want to fulfil those requirements. Many states require a certification test. The test may cover English spelling, grammar and punctuation, medical and legal terminology, dictation and transcription.

Additional certifications can help an experienced court report advance in his or her career. These additional certifications provide evidence of advanced skill and competency. Additional certifications include Registered Professional Reporter, Registered Merit Reporter, Registered Diplomate Reporter, Certified Realtime Reporter, Certified Broadcast Captioner and Certified CART Provider.
