Cosmetology may be the perfect career for you if you to like to help people with their appearance and appreciate a flexible work schedule. Cosmetologists perform manicures, pedicures, haircutting and styling, hair coloring, skin care, shampooing, and make-up application.

All states require cosmetologists to be licensed. Licensing requirements vary by state, but most states require a high school diploma or equivalent and graduation from a state-licensed school of cosmetology. Some states allow an apprenticeship to substitute for graduation from a training program. High Schools and vocational schools offer programs in hair care.

Cosmetology Schools Organized by State (US):  

Full-time programs usually last from nine months to two years. Training programs in specialties such as skin and nail care are shorter. Programs include both coursework and hands-on training. Hair care professionals take advanced courses throughout their careers to keep up with the latest styles. Both online and classroom programs are available.

When choosing a cosmetology training program, make sure that it qualifies you for licensing in the state where you plan to work.

Nearly one-half of cosmetologists are self-employed. They either own their own salon or lease booth space from a salon owner. Other cosmetology career options including teaching and consulting.

Job opportunities for cosmetologists are expected to be good. Competition for jobs at high-end salons will be stiff. Previous experience and licensing will have an advantage in hiring.

Earnings for entry-level workers are usually low, but increase with experience. Median hourly earnings, including tips and commissions, vary by specialty. In 2006 they were as follows:

  • Hairdressers and hairstylists: $10.25
  • Skin care specialists: $12.58
  • Manicurists and pedicurists: $9.23
  • Shampooers: $7.78
