On a recent airplane trip from Los Angeles to Miami, I met a professional animator.  Bleary-eyed from the uncomfortable overnight flight, we exchanged admiration for the sun rising in the east as we neared our destination. I asked the usual question for the person-sitting-next-to-you-on-the-plane: Are you coming home?

Sort of, he answered. He used to live in Florida, but he moved to L.A. recently because he’s in the movie industry. Yes, we agreed, L.A. is the place to be for a career in movies. He didn’t look like a movie star and he was wearing a Flintstones shirt full of cartoon characters, so I risked a guess: Are you an animator?

Awed by my insightful inquiry, he look amazed and said he was in fact an animator.  He studied animation at a college in Miami that specializes in communications and the arts.  He learned both the technical and artistic aspects of computer animation.

My airplane neighbor was fortunate to get a job in L.A. a year ago, soon after he graduated. Now he was returning to Boston to pick up his girlfriend and drive back to California. His first film, he added, is due out in the fall.

While he knows that his artistic talent and computer intelligence are essential for his career, he also knows that without his bachelor’s degree in visual and media arts from a high quality college, he would have a hard time getting his dream job. Other schools offer certificates and two-year programs in related fields, but a bachelor’s degree is essential for getting a foot in the right door.

He hopes to move back to Florida some day, but for now, early in his movie animation career, L.A. is the place to be, and what an exciting place it is for a young animator.
