Computer animation is a growing field that has many career possibilities. If you are wondering how to become an animator, there are now many ways to get the training you need to succeed in this profession.

It is possible to learn computer animation skills on your own. As with any computer-based realm, you can simply turn on your computer, go online, find the software you need to learn and study it.

This could be a long and difficult process. You could always find help in online forums, where you could ask questions and meet knowledgeable people.

How to Become an Animator

A more efficient way to learn computer animation skills is to enroll in a school that teaches these skills. Nowadays, you can find schools and programs everywhere with classes and degree programs in Digital Media, Digital Arts and Computer Animation.

If you earn a computer animation degree from one of these institutes, you will then have the credentials that will make it easier to get a job in this demanding and competitive field.

There is also the possibility of enrolling in an online computer animation program. This is sort of a compromise between attending school and learning on your own, with the advantage of gaining a degree (make sure you enroll in an accredited online school; not all of them are). You will also have access to faculty, so you can email them or attend webinars with your questions and get feedback. With an online program, you don't have to worry about the location of the school, and you can study when you have time instead of having to arrange your life according to a class schedule.

Still another possibility for learning the necessary skills would be to get an entry level job in a graphic arts studio, or some other place where computer animation is used. You could learn as you gain experience, and hopefully work your way up  to a better job. This, however, is not always an easy route, as you may be too busy with the basic tasks you are assigned to have much time for learning anything new.

However you decide to pursue your training, you should have some idea of what you want to specialize in. Computer animation is a vast and growing world, with opportunities in the movie and television industry, as well as advertising and video games. While many of the skills needed in these places overlap, there are different programs you need to learn and different focal points.

Of course, if you are fascinated with the field of computer animation but aren't sure exactly what kind of job you ultimately want, you can always enroll in a school and take a variety of classes until your focus narrows. Everything you learn can potentially help you, no matter where you decide to work. The more skills you have, the more options, and this is always a good thing.

Computer animation is a creative and expanding field, one that is sure to grow along with the public's demand for new types of entertainment. If you want to know how to become an animator, start by doing some research and look into some training programs that are offered in your area, or on the internet.
